TUT02 - Animating Dynamic Chain With Shape Layers

By Megan Palero
June  — 2019

We couldn't find any tutorial online to animate the chains in AE that is simple, easier to control with the layers, without the use of plugins and flexible enough to modify the style with textures.

Suggestions for script and expressions are welcome to improve the animation further and easier controls.

Intermediate Level
Must have the basic knowledge in using Track Mattes and Keyframes
Software Used, Adobe After Effects CC

Dynamics (A)

PART 1. IDEA

01. Create a Base Shape with stroke path in Shape Layer. Set your Stroke Width (I set mine to 500px). Make both it’s Line Cap & Join “Rounded” in this setting.

02. Duplicate the Base Shape layer and adjust the Stroke Width down to 50%. We will treat the layer we duplicated as a hole to punch in our first layer
by changing the Track Matte to ‘Alpha Inverted’.

PART 2. CONSTRUCT

Side A

03. Create your desired stroke path with curve handles in your Shape Layer (A). Make both it’s Line Cap & Join “Rounded” in this setting and set your own Stroke Width.

04. Let’s add a number of Base Loops by adding Dashes in your Stroke Settings. (I set the value of Dash to 100 with 75px Stroke Width to maintain a good gap in between loops.)

5. Duplicate the Shape Layer (B) to punch a hole in our base loop by adjusting the Stroke Width down to 50% and changing the Track Matte of our Shape Layer (A) to ‘Alpha Inverted’.

6. Duplicate the Shape Layer (B) you have punched in our base loops.
• Turn on the visibility mode and set the Stroke Width half of it’s value.
• Adjust the Offset value of your Dashes from “0” to whatever the value of your Dash.

Dynamics (C)

PART 3. ANIMATE & STYLE

7. Pick Whip the Stroke Path of Shape Layer (B) and (C) to the Path property of Shape Layer (A).

8. Animate the Path of Shape Layer (A).

Inherit the path value
to control the animation easier.
